Instructions on how to remove any version of Norton AntiVirus from 2002 on
Step 1
Is to really important to know just what Norton Anti Virus (NAV) product you have. There are many different ways to get Norton’s AntiVirus:
ALL the versions of Norton’s AntiVirus are listed by the date for the year they are issued for and you get one year of updates from the time each version is installed
example: Norton Anti Virus 2003 or NAV 2003.
So now that you know what version you have lets move on.
Step 2
Go to Add and Remove Programs and uninstall your Norton’s Antivirus
If your Norton’s AntiVirus is included with some other Norton Product you should remove that as well right now. If you want to keep the other Norton’s Product, still uninstall it and then reinstall it with a custom install when you are done with the removal of Norton’s AntiVirus.
If your NAV was just bundled with other boxes or disks of Norton’s product’s you may now go on to Step 3
Step 3
Is to go to this web page: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606
Read this entire page and follow the instructions:
Go to all the Blue Links and follow those instructions as well that pertain to your version of Norton’s AntiVirus.
Also click on all the yellow +’s for more info.
See also the section under References in red on that page, for more help.
I would suggest printing it out for reference later.
(If your version is not NAV 2003 or earlier)
Scroll down until you find your Norton’s product that includes Norton AntiVirus)
Step 4
Look for the RNAVxxxx.exe tool (where xxxx is your version / year)
Download it to your desktop (so you can find it easy) and run / click on that that program.
For NAV2003, as an example it would be: Rnav2003.exe utility
Step 5
Find the section on the page that has a Blue Link (to your version that is) to:
How to uninstall Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall using the RnisUPG.exe removal utility
Find the link to the RNIS tool.
Download it to your desktop (so you can find it easy) and run / click on that that program.
And example for version / year 2003 would be: RnisUPG.exe file
Step 6
Find Blue Link for Removing Norton’s System Works (even if you don’t have that program) … go to that page (read and follow all the instructions there if you are also removing Norton’s System Works on those Pages) and look for the NSW ‘SYMcln’ removal tool.
Or maybe go to this link and download it there and save it to your desktop so you can find it easier. Download SYMClean from the Symantec FTP site.
Step 7 (optional)
Go to this site: http://www.symantec.com/feedback/ and/or write an email to Symantec tell them how unbelievably complicated it is to remove one of their products and threaten to never use them again for all of this aggravation just to remove a product for whatever reason!
Hope this helps you out,
Again by following all the Blue Links on this page: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606
You should be able to successfully remove your version of Norton’s AntiVirus. Just be sure to follow the Steps 4, 5 & 6 above even though the page does not say to do them...
They are additional steps that a Symantec Product Support Analyst, told me to do, when I called and demanded to speak to an English-speaking tech support person Symantec.
Good Luck,
